Open Space Tax Referendum to be on the November Ballot:

The Township Committee has been aggressively pursuing the preservation of remaining open space in our Township.  We are in the early stages of working with the County and the land owners of the formal Maple Ridge Golf Course in an effort to preserve that beautiful piece of property.  We also are working on other potential preservation projects.  Unfortunately these acquisitions are costly.  However the Township Committee feels strongly that it is an investment that we can't afford not to make.  In order to properly fund these acquisitions we will be asking the residents to support an increase in our Open Space Tax.  The Open Space Tax is currently two cents and the ballot question will ask the voters to support increasing it to four cents.  The investment in preservation pays many dividends.  Saving the land from development decreases traffic, saves the environment, lessens the burden on the tax base, and contributes to our quality of life.

Keep Recycling that Yard Waste!

Please keep in mind the Township has implemented a yard waste recycling program.  Pick up of these containers will be starting on March 30, 2008.  The ability to keep the grass clippings and small yard waste out of the Solid Waste trash benefits us in several ways.  The financial benefits are realized because it costs the taxpayers about $75 per ton to dispose of solid waste and recycling the yard waste is free.  The environment benefits by recycling and putting less waste in our landfills.  If you have not requested your free yard waste container you can do so by contacting the Public Works Department at 468-1502.  Thank You for your support of this great program.

 Two Dedicated Township Employees Retiring:

The Township will be losing two long time employees to retirement and I wanted to publicly thank them for their years of dedicated and honorable service to the Township of Mantua.

Police Chief Graham Land started with the Township of Mantua on 2/12/1973.  He worked as a Dispatcher, Cadet, Patrolman, Detective, Detective-Sergeant and was named Chief of Police on 10/12/1999.  Chief Land has many accomplishments throughout his career but perhaps his greatest legacy will be his leadership in making our Police building and department a state of the art example to all departments in the State.  Chief Land will be retiring on June 30, 2008 and will be missed.

Township Administrator and Mantua Township MUA Executive Director Rich Subers began his employment with the Mantua MUA on 12/12/1983.  Rich assumed the duties of Township Administrator on 7/13/1998.  Rich worked for both Democrat and Republican Administrations and both sides relied on his steady leadership and uncanny ability to solve problems.  He will also be missed.
